Drum & Bass: Counter Intelligence [Label pack]

Counter Intelligence [Label pack]

CI001
CI001 - Resound vs Paradox

Side C: Resound - Circular Structure

What
Resound brings us is a deep and moving number called 'Circular
Structure'. It kicks of with subtle keys and precisely placed sweeps
that help usher in a crisp yet punchy break. The keyboard line is
retained throughout the track and helps pulling the listener into a
trance. Fans of 720 Degrees, Covert Operations right through to
Certificate 18 will find many pleasing elements within ?Circular
Structure? to keep them grooving.

Side I: Resound - Circular Structure (Paradox Drumfunk Remix)

For
those who like their drums right at the forefront will go nuts for
Paradox's 'Drumfunk Remix' of 'Circular Structure'. In true Paradox
fashion he stripped it right down to the bare essentials and rebuilt it
from the ground up. The 'Drumfunk Remix' retains the keyboard work of
the original, but completely overhauls the drums and bassline into a
monster of a track that is bound to make the more clued up dancefloors
lose it.

CI002
CI002 - Macc & Polska

Side C: Macc - Drum Day (Beta 2 Remix)

Best
known to date as 'that' drum n bass producer i.e. the guy who also
represents live on the drums, Macc is a young and supremely talented
beats producer out of London. When not kicking up a storm on his drum
kit as part of his awesome live PA, he can be found dicing breaks with
dexterity and focus.
Even better, Beta 2 steps up to the plate for
the remix. One of the current golden boys at Metalheadz HQ (and what
better recommendation than that?), Beta 2 is on his usual trademark
break-heavy, string-laden style here. Taking the rolling drums of
Macc?s original Drum Day, he flips the script and heads for open
country. Bristling with energy, this one is all about the tight drops,
and about rubbing up a gently plucked guitar against the rudeness of a
simple 3-note riff. But as ever, a classic, lush Beta 2 breakdown
reminds us that with him, it?s always music first.

Side I: Polska - Hexplore

Finally
starting to get the attention he deserves, the talents of the one known
as Polska have remained largely un-mined until now? but all the while,
his widescreen, cinematic vision of drum n bass has only deepened in
intensity and musicality. With a long, moody ambient opener, heavy with
a sense of expectation, Hexplore demonstrates Polska?s ability to glide
between shades of light and dark with style ? and to make it feel
utterly natural as we go with him? The initial drama of the intro peels
back to reveal the track in all its true wide-eyed wonder ? as a
roller. A skilfully focussed and driving beat workout follows, its
linear flow and upbeat vibe offset by the deft percussive cuts and by
the throbbing subs underneath? all combining to demonstrate that there
is a powerful new presence in the Force of Paradox-school rhythm
science? and its name is Polska!

CI003
CI003 - Alpha Omega

PROMO RELEASE DATE : March 20th 2006
FULL RELEASE DATE: April 24th 2006

Heavy Heavy Heavy!!!

The
multi-talented Alpha Omega aka Colin Lindo (also aka Nubian Minds) has
already demonstrated his musical versatility many times over, flexing
crucial releases and on a slew of highly respected labels over nearly
ten years, including old skool Reinforced, Renegade Hardware, Offshore,
Archive, 2000 Black and Carl Craig’s Planet E label. From drum n bass
to broken beat to the deepest of techno, the man has crafted his own
style, fusing genres to create a sound that is identifiably his own.

Now
the original techno sound-warrior returns with an absolute monster of a
twelve that brings new meaning to the word ‘danger’ in drum n bass…
Indeed, we’ve already heard this pairing described as ‘the single that
should have come out on Headz’….
Now, while we wouldn’t be so bold
as to describe it as such (!) there’s no doubt in our minds that this
one has all the ambition and all the heaviness of a classic Headz bomb:
futuristic, raw, dark, technical…. but always musical. And with both
tunes currently getting absolutely rinsed by the likes of Doc Scott,
Bailey and Loxy & Ink, you can be guaranteed that Mr. Lindo has
pulled out all the stops on this one to produce something truly unique.

Side C: Alpha Omega – 10 Faces Of Death

Where
all too many supposedly ‘heavy’ dnb tunes flail and thrash about
blindly like an aged drunk, ’10 Faces of Death’ thrusts, darts, punches
and then positively slams like a seasoned kick-boxer. Tuff breaks
ricochet off each other around a pile-driving rhythm that just won’t
let up while the deepest of pads unfold to paint an epic, apocalyptic
backdrop… Recalling the ghosts of ‘Terminator’, this beast of a track
exhibits a mutant restlessness that sees it morphing from the word go,
and a fury that can only be described as ‘Hardcore’. Miss it at your
peril!

Side I: Alpha Omega – Discard The Truth

Turn to
the flip for more shape-shifting technoid adventures on ‘Discard The
Truth’. Here Colin Lindo tells it like it is in the world – or rather,
the Universe of Alpha Omega, rolling out sparse stepping metallic drums
and sending them marching deep into alien territory to see what they
might find… As ever, the results are dangerously unpredictable, and yet
strangely compelling!

CI004
CI004 - Infuse vs Dak

PROMO RELEASE DATE : May 1st 2006
FULL RELEASE DATE: June 5th 2006

Now
coming with the new school, C.I. 004 features two artists whose work
richly illustrates just what the C.I. sound is all about. We’re very
excited about this one, so let’s not mess about!

Side C: Infuse – Observer

Fans
of the atmospheric styles who like to walk on the ruff side
occasionally will lap this one up, as will those who normally dig only
the most hardcore of breaks n subs. Why? Because it represents what
many aspire to achieve in drum n bass (but rarely do in these days of
one-idea tracks): it actually takes us on a journey… it actually brings
us somewhere new!

A heavy atmospheric roller that moves with
ease (and more than a little panache) from darkness into the light,
‘Observer’ sees some slick break-switching gathering pace over a dark
and queasy intro as it builds and builds. Pounding beats, subs and tuff
cymbal-heavy breaks drop in to up the ante until (still haunted by the
ghosts of techstep) we’re taken down… down into a sweet, sweet roll-out…

DJs:
yes, you got it right - you bag this one and you know you’ll still be
able to drop it years from now - at any point in your set - and it’s
still gonna do the damage…

Watch out for more quality beats from Infuse coming on Bassbin and Vibe’z later this year.

Side I: Dak - Nutcase

Secondly,
Dak - already a favourite of C.I. Digital fans. OK, so we’ve been
hearing a lot of talk about the return of the deeper styles in drum n
bass recently…. all we can say is when people talk about “deep” drum n
bass in the year 2006, can you please do everyone a favour and play ‘em
this?!

Recalling the glory days of Certificate 18’s finest
output, and exhibiting a glacial quality that must at least in part
have been inspired by the northerly climes of his home in Finland,
Dak’s ‘Nutcase’ rolls out in a fragmented but unerring techno style
that remains absolutely locked on target from beginning right to the
very end.

Classically trained, and a fan and producer of minimal
techno, Dak’s chief musical loves combine with ease in a unique dnb
frame on this piece… Deliciously deep, it positively pulses with life,
pulling back layer after concealing layer to reveal mysterious resonant
chambers of sound, and beyond that, twisted undergrowth, through which
subtle shards of amen and apache breaks snake their way.

Whether
for chilling deep in the night, or for dropping on the more discerning
dancefloor whilst deep, deep in the mix; either way, the underlying
aura of menace keeps this one urgent and rolling every time…

CI005
CI005 - Pieter K

PROMO RELEASE DATE : August 2006
FULL RELEASE DATE: September 2006

Commanding
one of the most original takes on drum n bass to emerge from the US so
far, Pieter K’s diversity and his commitment to truly forging his own
musical path stands in sharp contrast to many of his peers. His
‘Everything All the Time’ LP – released 4 years ago on Breakbeat
Science – showcased an astonishingly developed fusion of electronica
with original breaks (recorded for the most part by the man himself),
and has stood the test of time with ease… indeed, some would argue that
drum n bass as a whole has yet to catch up.

Since then, Pieter
has spent much of his time working on a variety of non-dnb projects,
and bar his acclaimed collaboration with Klute (‘Material Trip’ on Comm
Suicide / Offshore) and two tracks on the first of the limited edition
Subvert Central EPs, we’ve been starved of his trademark drum n bass!
With that in mind, we’re delighted to have been given the opportunity
to get some more of his ninja beats on wax.

Side C: Pieter K - Temerity

‘Temerity’
first came to most people’s attention after Hive dropped it on BBC's
Breezeblock show; indeed at one stage, this tune looked set to emerge
on Hive’s own Violence label (which should come as a
recommendation
to those who like their drum n bass heavy and raw!)… male vocals, sweet
pads and melodic bleeps ride over a mash-up of rollin beats and filthy
bass, recalling that old skool Dillinja / Lemon D science of hardcore
groove at its best.

Side I1: Tinfed - Dangergirl (Pieter K Remix)

Check
the flip for a real special treat, a Pieter K remix of ‘Dangergirl’ by
Tinfed, where the original is diced and sliced with a heavy dub
sensibility, but one that eschews all the usual dub clichés in favour
of something that can wander at ease into a beautiful string-soaked
climax…

Side I2: Pieter K - Twice As Once

Finally the
gorgeous ‘Twice As Once’ rounds off this EP – another gem recorded at
around the time Pieter’s first album for BBS dropped but which
(fortunately for us) didn’t make it to the final selection.
Listen for yourself and marvel at the man’s widescreen vision!

CI006
CI006 - ICR vs Macc

PROMO RELEASE DATE : September 2006
FULL RELEASE DATE: October 2006

So
much quality music out there that we want to give props to right now…
so for CI006 we're bringing you prime tasters from two producers that
always take the time to craft something truly unique…

Side C: ICR - So Unloved

24
years old Zoltan Gal from Hungary has played a significant role in
Hungary's emergent dnb scene, not only is he editor of Hungarian dnb
webzine Impulsecreator.hu, he has also represented his country on wax
since 2003. In that time, he's had a very healthy smattering of
releases on labels such as Breakbeat Science / Orgone, Basswerk,
Offshore, Good Looking, Covert Operations, Nerve and Fokuz.

Now
he comes to Counter Intelligence with 'So Unloved', a haunting low-key
roller inspired by the moody and reflective world of minimal movie
soundtracks. A low tremulous piano is keyed ominously, marking time as
the track's gliding rhythms propel it ever-forward, culminating in a
cut-up drum workout that never feels at odds with the deep and heavy
atmospherics that remain so prevalent throughout…

Watch out for
further material from ICR here on Counter Intelligence and on Flatline
Audio, Thermal and Exegene, plus appearances on Offshore and Vibe'z
compilation LPs.
Details of all his latest releases can be found by checking http://www.drumandbass.hu/icr

Side I: Macc - End Of Me

Drum-propagandist
Macc is on something of a roll right now and thus it's a pleasure to
welcome him back to Counter Intelligence after his proxy appearance on
CI002 with Beta 2's remix of his awesome 'Drum Day'. Here, on 'End Of
Me', Macc takes on the famed Apache break and feeds it through the
studio rhythm-grinder with the dexterity that only a man schooled in
Jazz proper could really achieve… the flow is never interrupted
throughout, and the breaks roll effortlessly against a backdrop of
beautiful melancholia.

CI007
CI007 - Martsman vs Cartridge

PROMO RELEASE DATE : 7th May 2007
FULL RELEASE DATE: 11th June 2007

Another
set of debuts for the label, CI007 brings you German funkster Martsman
and renegade beatmaster turned rockstar Cartridge from Canada…

Side C: Martsman - Antifunk

German
Newcomer Martin Heinze aka Martsman got into Drum & Bass around the
end of the 90s. Artists like Alpha Omega, 4hero, Sonar Circle and
Squarepusher had a formative influence on him during the first years
and after witnessing a Paradox live set in 2001, his ever growing
interest in Drum & Bass evolved to the point where he began to
produce his own music.

With his affection for prominent
basslines and stumbling breaks in combination with glitchy edits and
bleepy minimalism, Martsman has developed a unique musical style which
extends the current perception of Drum & Bass.

His vinyl
debut in 2005 on New York based Offshore Recordings as well as digital
releases on net-labels Exegene and Plainaudio have received recognition
from all over the Leftfield scene.

His debut 'Antifunk' on
Counter Intelligence features his distinct flavour of Drum & Bass
and at the same time reminisces the glory days of the Bristolian label
Full Cycle.
Jump funk for the New Golden Age of Drum & Bass!!

Keep an eye out for forthcoming Martsman material here on Counter Intelligence and on Offshore, Breakin and AlphaCut.
Details of all his latest releases can be found by checking http://www.martsman.de

Side I: Cartridge - Just Let Go

The
enfant terrible of the drum'n'bass scene, Scott Koladich a.k.a.
Cartridge, would have been a glamrocker had he lived before his time.
He steps up to the plate with the masterful 'Just Let Go', which was produced 5 years ago according to Scott himself.

The
tune has everything befitting a (timeless) future classic-to-be: a
hypnotizing vocal hookline, a tough B-boy-weight rolling breakbeat
workout and a throbbing pulsating bassline propelling the tune ever
forward into the breakdown where layers of trance-inspired pads
introduce the second coming and together with the unrelenting vocal
line lift the tune to it's climactic apotheosis.

Cartridge has
officially quit Drum & Bass, as Scott has claimed several times
over the last few years, but his gems keep (re)surfacing, so you never
know what to expect in the future.

CI008
CI008 - Dissident vs Fracture & Neptune

PROMO RELEASE DATE : 24th September 2007
FULL RELEASE DATE: 5th November 2007

Both
Dissident and Fracture & Neptune stand for the deeper sounds on
CI008. This single is a tribute to Certificate 18, on which it could
have been released if this label was still around today. Sadly it’s
not, so it’s up to others to put the deeper side of drum’n’bass on the
market these days. We're all up for that, so look no further!

Side C 1: Dissident - Nothing Outside Nothing
Side C 2: Dissident - Blind Viewer

Dissident
is the production name of Russian based Stanislaw Sevostyanikhin.
Residing in St.Petersburg on the shore of the Baltic Sea, he has spent
the last eleven years slicing beats, sampling street and industrial
sounds and perfecting his unique sound.

Dissident is one of
those talented artists with a shocking lack of releases, so we decided
we would give him an extra push, and let him deliver a high quality
double A-side.

'Nothing Outside Nothing' comes at you with
rolling beats and percussion, layered with Russian chanting and ethnic
instruments, delivering blows with its massive neurofunk basslines:
certainly exploring new terrain for the label.
'Blind Viewer' is something you’ll have to hear for yourselves: a future funk slice of half-tempo atmospheric glitch-step.

Keep an eye out for forthcoming Dissident material here on Counter Intelligence and on Subtle Audio.
Dissident is also working hard on an album together with Fluter for his own label Opposide Records.
More information can be found at http://dissident.fromru.com

Side I: Fracture & Neptune - Planet 13

Fracture
& Neptune have been turning heads ever since their debut on Danny
Break's Droppin Science back in 2002, and have since released their
tracks on several labels including Bassbin, Inperspective, Offshore,
Outsider, Subvert Central and Hospital's sublabel Med School. Not only
excellent producers these guys are also great DJs with an impeccable
selection.

Fracture & Neptune’s flipside tune ‘Planet 13’ came handpicked and recommended by Teebee.
If that isn’t enough recommendation, let me tell you you haven’t heard such a deep tune from the boys yet!
Warm
lush pads run over quirky stepping beats before a bleepy lead comes in
to accentuate the typical melody; it pays tribute to masters of
minimalism such as Polar, but Charlie & Nelson add their own
distinct touch & style.

CID001
CID001 - Lopus - Glow

RELEASE DATE : February 2007

Under the guise of Lopus, Aki Haapaniemi makes beautiful soundscapes and drones.
A
seemingly stark contrast to his drum'n 'bass work under the producer
name of Dak, we think his 'Glow' album project perfectly complements
his deep and ambient drum&bass music.

Lopus - Glow
Lopus - Glow (Underwater)
Lopus - Fallout
Lopus - Glow (Radiation)
Lopus - Cave System
Lopus - Glow (Cloud)
Lopus - Glow (Lava)
Lopus - Luoto
